The increasing reliance on electronic devices in modern society has led to an unprecedented surge in the generation of electronic waste (e-waste). This poses a significant environmental and public health challenge, particularly in developing countries like Pakistan, where e-waste management infrastructure and awareness are often inadequate. The improper handling and disposal of e-waste can result in the release of hazardous substances into the environment, contaminating soil, water, and air, and posing risks to human health and ecosystems.
Recognizing the urgency of this issue, the Pak Mission Society (PMS) collaborated with the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (PAK-EPA) and commissioned this study to assess the e-waste situation in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, two major urban centers in Pakistan. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of e-waste generation, management practices, and disposal methods in these cities. The findings will inform the development of recommendations and an action plan to improve e-waste management, promote sustainable practices, and mitigate the negative impacts of e-waste on the environment and public health.
